Annual creeping herb, 3-10 m long. Leaf simple, alternate, broadly ovate orreniformorbicular, 10-35 cm wide, 7-35 cm long, 5-7-lobed, whitish pilose. Flower solitary, axillary, unisexual, monoecious; corolla campanulate, bright yellow or orange-yellow. Fruit pepo, compressed-globose; pulp yellow or orange; seeds ovate, sordidly white or pale yellow.
Kernel from mature seed: contains cucurbitin; anthelmintic, crush 60 g with milk or water, divide into 3 doses, take every 2 hours followed by castor oil 30 minutes after the last dose; crush with small amount of water, apply to treat mild skin infections and inflammations. Root: tonic, aphrodisiac. Clinical trials confirmed that seed extract can kill tapeworm and blood flukes.
