The tuberous root of this plant has been used in Thai medicine for centuries-particularly in the Northern hills of Thailand. There are 2 varieties that are widely used, White Kwao Krua 'Pueraria mirifica1 (Air Shaw & Suvatabhandau) and Red Kwao Krua 'Butea superba'.The branches have 3 leaflets with a shiny appearance like pea pods. The flower is a purplish blue with flat pods. The plant is propagated by seeds. The root has a bulb with a browny white skin with either white or red flesh inside.
