Climbing undershrub. Leaves even-pinnate, alternate distichous; leaflets 5-16 pairs, oblong or obovate, 0.6-0.9 cm wide, 1.3-2 cm long, appressed pubescent on lower surface. Inflorescence in terminal or axillary raceme; flowers white, pea-shaped. Pod oblong, flat; seed subglobose, white.
Dried leaf: contains sweetening substance, abrus-oside A, B, C and D, 30-100 times sweeter than sugar; substitutes for sugar in food and soft drinks. Caution: seed toxic as A. precatorius.
